The Lillionoah trail is a beautiful hike. It is located in the Paugussett State Forest and is surrounded on three sides by water: the Shepaug River, Lake Lillinonah, and Pond Brook. All which appear to all be a part of the Housatonic River. The terrain is a mix of forest floor, rocks and dirt roads.
The trail has a lot of climbs both up and down. I had read on one review to go in a certain direction to limit the amount of ups, but I couldn’t remember which it was. We took counter clockwise, and I believe we had more ups than down, but not by much.
The ferns were stating to spread out and there were many things in bloom, including the Mountain Laurel. This trail has fantastic tall trees and great rocks throughout.
Notables along the way:
- wild garlic
- rock features
- water views
- black berries
- mock strawberries
