Starting at Peterson Park in Wolcott, CT and ending at Wilton Rd, Plymouth, CT ~ 10 miles and 4hrs 49mins
Overall the first section of the Mattatuck Trail is gorgeous. There are a few road walks on this section, but they are through “nice” little neighborhoods and not lengthy. The trail starts in the back of Peterson Park. Instantly we were greeted by a custom sign to address the problem with littering, but unfortunately, as we soon found out, there is still a good amount of litter on the trail.
Outside of human debris, this trail is beautiful. It has a lot of sparkling quartz, water features, beautiful trees, bridges, a cave, and fantastic rocks, and moss.
There were a few sections that could be more clearly marked, and there were two or three fallen trees on the trail, but regardless it is an easy hike. In true blue-blazed fashion, the last couple of miles just kept going up, down, and up again. So when in doubt of which way to go, “the answer is always up.”
I am excited to see the rest of this trail as the first 10 miles were great!
