Metacomet Trail Part 5

Starting at 96-98 Wintonbury Rd, Bloomfield and ending at 4-6 Newgate Rd in East Granby, CT ~ 7.5 miles and 4 hours.

Even though the map said we only had 12.2 miles left f the CT portion of the Metacomet, we knew that it would probably be more like 14.5 and since it was freezing out we decided to split this into a “6 mile” chunk. It ended up being 7.5 so it is fortunate that we did.

This section of trail is a calm and pretty area and mostly on the ridgeline, so there are many lookout points. It is mainly a combination of relatively flat and gentle descents and climbs, until you get about 6 miles in and then the Metacomet works your calves! It was surprisingly quiet in the woods even though we were by highways and two airports.

Besides some cool rocks and trees, one of my favorite things was the fireplace with the crystal door knob on the side. And yes, I twisted the crystal in the woods and with Bryan’s prompting twisted it back to our dimension.

We didn’t pass too many people throughout the day (probably because of the extreme cold), but those we passed were pretty friendly. We didn’t see much for wildlife either, but we saw their tracks.

To my liking, there was very little time spent walking on any main roads. One small section took us over a bridge to cross the Farmington River before ducking us back into the woods. The trail also ends on a main road to get to the parking at Newgate.
