Starting at the parking on Shetucket Turnpike and ending at 274-290 Hell Hollow Road. Voluntown, CT ~ 7.6 miles and 3 hrs 25 mins
We finally made it back to do a little more of the Pachaug Trail. With today’s miles we officially surpassed 400 miles of blue blazed hiking!
This section of trail is very pretty with several water features including: Wixaboxet Marsh, Great Meadow Brook Pond, and Hell Hollow Pond.
The trail is mainly flat and consists of forest floor, some rocks, and a couple sections of road walk. The dirt bikers were very active on the first section of road. I was grateful for my neon sweatshirt to help them see us — most were very polite, slowing down and moving over when they passed us.
After we ducked back into the woods we eventually came to a really beautiful stream to cross with rocks covered in lush green moss. It is really something of beauty, however the next section of trail is covered in (rose) prickers and it’s not so pretty. This section is not well travelled and overgrown. The thorns and brush grabbed at us until we reached the road.
The road walk took us past a farm and up to Hell Hollow Road. The trail follows the road for a bit past another field and then ducks back into the woods and down the only notable hill on the trail. This takes you past Hell Hollow Pond and directly back to parking.
