Starting at Devil’s Hopyard and then heading over to Gillette’s Castle East Haddam, CT – various trails and miles
For this particular outing I wanted to stick close to home and to trails that I knew really well. Since Devil’s Hopyard is pretty any time of year we started out there first. The falls were flowing and there were also cool looking ice formations. After going up to the look out, around and back down, we decided that we could hike some more and headed over to Gillette’s Castle.
We went around the trails up behind the pond and tunnel and then over to the trails by the river behind the castle. We stopped to talk to two young hikers who were tucked under an overhang. It was warm enough out that the icicles were melting and one of the hikers warned us not to stand where we were because some had been falling down. We both moved over and continued to talk. I apparently moved myself into danger though. A giant icicle fell barley missing my head. Mike was surprised at how I stayed so calm after watching me almost get hurt (possibly killed). I didn’t see it come down — that’s how.
It must have been my lucky day!
