Metacomet-Monadnock Trail (MA NET Sec 7)

Starting 41 Old Mountain Rd, South Hadley, MA and ending at 1500 West Street, Amherst, MA (Notch Visitor Center) ~ 7.5 miles, 4 hrs and 11 mins

Due to snow in Vermont we decided to play it safe, headed south, and picked a random section of the Metacomet in Massachusetts. The section we picked spans the Mount Holyoke Range and includes the Seven Sisters.

We read descriptions ahead of time that contained words like “unrelenting,” or “seemingly endless,” when describing the hills — and they weren’t wrong. There are a few areas where the white blazes weren’t clear and anytime we were confused as to where to go, Bryan would say, “just go up,” — and he was right! We also noted that Newman’s Law was in full effect: For every downhill there is an equal or opposite re-hill.

Outside of the multiple hills being a little rough on the knees, this trail is a fun one. It has many rocky sections that require deliberate steps and great views. Since the trail is mostly traprock, I would recommend avoiding it on wet or icy days.
