Chatfield Hollow State Park

Located at 381 CT-80, Killingworth, CT. We hiked various Trails ~ 9.5 miles

Today we revisited a favorite stomping ground and hit various trails. Chatfield Hollow is a beautiful spot with a pond, covered bridge, boardwalk, water wheel and lots of rocks.

None of the trails are difficult, and provided you do not fail to be a mountain goat like I did, the rock scrambles are fairly easy. I tried climbing a wet rock (which was just dumb) and paid the price with some beautiful rock rash on my forearm and knees.

Dana and I started with the green trail (Chimney Trail) which is really short but has beautiful rocks. (This is where I failed to be a mountain goat.) We then walked the main road down to the red trail (Ridge Trail) to the blue trail (West Crest Trail). We walked the road back to take the boardwalk and had to head back to the parking lot to change boots. We took the boardwalk back to the other side to hop on the orange trail which was misread and renamed the “Derp Woods Trail,” and checked out the water wheel and then took the main road back to the parking lot.

The mushrooms, flowers, and rocks were the stars of the show today. While photographing one of the mushrooms, I was happily photobombed by a hoppy toad and slug. We discovered two new flowers: the spotted wintergreen and the buttonbush. It really was a fantastic “nature walk.”
